How to Create Live Surveys and Polls with StrawPoll and ScreenCloud

What is StrawPoll?

StrawPoll is an online platform that allows users to create instant, real-time online polls and surveys for free. It simplifies the process of gathering opinions on various topics by enabling users to create polls quickly and easily.

It is commonly used in various contexts, including social media platforms, online communities, and business settings, to gather feedback, make decisions, or simply engage with an audience.

In short, if you need to take a quick poll to gauge people's opinions or sentiment on a specific subject; or you're looking to give your people a voice in an office, education or public space, StrawPoll is a useful tool.

In addition to this, you can also display the results of your live polls, or invite people to vote in your straw poll by using digital displays, in-office TVs, tablets, and other forms of digital signage. All you need to do is set up your straw poll template on the ScreenCloud app using one of our apps.

How to integrate StrawPoll with ScreenCloud

StrawPoll features a very generous free tier, making it an excellent tool for anyone looking to run a straw ballot and get insight into their audience sentiment on specific subjects.

While it is pretty straightforward to get up and running using straw polls on ScreenCloud, there are a few steps to take.

Follow the 6 steps below to learn how you can integrate StrawPoll with ScreenCloud:

1. Create your poll and save the share link

In your StrawPoll account, under Dashboard, select +Create poll

Set your poll title, add your answer options, and select your poll’s voting settings. When you're ready, save your work by hitting Create poll.

With your poll now ready, you can copy the unique share code that is generated and move on to your next step.

2. Set the share link in ScreenCloud’s Ask a Question app

Create your Ask a Question app, and add your poll question and the link to your StrawPoll questionnaire.

This will display an easily scannable QR code of the link, for viewers to access the poll and make their vote.

3. Change the poll embed link to display the results

Head back to Strawpoll, and click the Embed link of the polls’ shared link

Edit the code where it is (or copy it and edit it elsewhere), and add /results to the URL you see after src=

Copy the complete Embedded code, which includes the “/results”, that you added, and move on to the next steps.

4. Insert the embed link for the poll results into the Playgrounds app

Create a new Playgrounds app, and select Start with a blank template

Where it says “Add your code here”, please insert the Embed code you copied above. The results should look like this.

As you preview the app, you’ll see that it contains your poll results.

5. Modify and design your poll in the Playground app

If you can code it, your signage can show it! With the available tools of the Playground app, you can make design adjustments to your liking. At this step, you will require coding knowledge. You can find references and ideas with the help of CodePen or JSFiddle.

Below is a small sample of very minor adjustments.

You can also change the embedded poll's theme, which is done outside of the Playgrounds app.

For this, move back to StrawPoll, click the options button for your poll, Poll settings > Design, and choose one of the available themes.

You can also create your own selections of colors for your theme by selecting Create your theme.

Preview your Playground app to see how the different coded designs and StrawPoll themes take effect.

6. Set your apps connected to StrawPoll in a playlist, channel, and to your screens

When you are happy with what you see, place the Ask A Question app and your Playground app wherever they are needed for your screens and company. You might want to schedule the poll results to appear at a later time, after you are sure each viewer has presented their opinion.

Don’t forget to use Themes for Channels to apply your branding!
