What is Screen Resolution?

Screen resolution refers to the number of pixels that a display can show, measured by the count across the horizontal and vertical axes. For example, a screen resolution of 1920x1080 means the display has 1,920 pixels horizontally and 1,080 vertically. The more pixels, the greater the potential for image detail and clarity.

Resolution doesn't exist in isolation. Image sharpness also depends on screen size and viewing distance. A 1920x1080 resolution on a 24-inch monitor looks sharp, but the same resolution stretched across a 75-inch display can look pixelated, especially up close.

Here's a quick breakdown of the most common formats:

  • HD (720p): 1280x720 pixels
  • Full HD (1080p): 1920x1080 pixels
  • 2K: 2048x1080 pixels (mostly used in cinema projection)
  • 4K Ultra HD: 3840x2160 pixels
  • Cinema 4K (DCI 4K): 4096x2160 pixels

Each resolution step up typically quadruples the total number of pixels.

Increasingly you’ll also find 8k screen resolution as an option, with a resolution of 7680x4320 pixels - four times the pixel count of 4K, and sixteen times that of Full HD! 

While 8k offers exceptional detail, especially for very large screens used in immersive experiences, high-end video walls, or specialized fields like medical imaging and simulation, it’s not really consumer ready at the time of writing. This is mostly down to the lack of content in 8k, the hardware demands and the fact that it’s also still very expensive. 

HD vs Full HD

HD, or 720p, was once the industry standard for broadcast TV and early flat-screen displays. These days, HD/720p is considered a baseline, and usually reserved for smaller screens, cheap PC monitors or entry-level TVs.

Full HD, or 1080p, is a step up with a sharper, more detailed image. It became the dominant format for TV broadcasts, Blu-ray discs, and online video during the 2010s. The key advantages of Full HD over HD include:

  • Better detail, especially on screens 32 inches and larger
  • Widespread content compatibility across streaming platforms and digital signage
  • More suitable for dynamic or text-heavy content

4K vs Ultra HD (Cinema 4K)

The term "4K" is often used interchangeably with "Ultra HD" (UHD), but there are technical distinctions worth noting.

Ultra HD (3840x2160) is the consumer-facing standard used in TVs, monitors, and streaming platforms. It's exactly four times the pixel count of Full HD, which results in improved detail, smoother curves, and sharper text, especially on large screens.

Cinema 4K (DCI 4K), by contrast, uses a slightly wider resolution of 4096x2160 and is the standard for digital cinema production. This extra width provides flexibility for filmmakers but is rarely found in consumer devices outside of specialized displays.

Key considerations when moving to 4K:

  • Content: Native 4K content is widely available but still not universal. Upscaling from 1080p is common.
  • Bandwidth: Streaming 4K requires a fast and stable internet connection, typically 20-25 Mbps per stream.
  • Hardware: 4K displays need more powerful processors and graphics hardware, particularly in signage players.
  • File Size: Video files at 4K are significantly larger, impacting storage and network planning.

Choosing between 4k vs HD TV screens

Why Screen Quality Matters More Than Resolution Alone

If you’ve ever compared two (or more) TVs side by side, you might have noticed a sharp contrast in quality even for the same resolution. And sometimes even a lower resolution screen might look better than a high spec one…

This is because while resolution defines how many pixels a screen can display, it doesn't guarantee how sharp or vivid the image will look in practice. The quality of the screen itself - its panel type, color accuracy, contrast ratio, brightness, and processing tech - can have a massive impact on how you actually perceive the image.

In short, not all displays are created equal. Here’s why:

1. Pixel density and screen size

A 4K resolution on a 32-inch screen looks incredibly sharp because the pixels are tightly packed. The same resolution on an 85-inch screen may appear softer if you’re standing close, simply because the pixels are more spread out. This is known as pixel density, often measured in pixels per inch (PPI). Higher PPI generally means a sharper image.

2. Panel type and color performance

Two screens with identical 4K resolution can look vastly different if one uses an IPS panel with accurate color reproduction and the other uses a low-cost TN panel with washed-out tones. Display technology such as OLED, QLED, IPS, or LED affects color vibrancy, black levels, and consistency across angles.

3. Image processing and scaling

Many displays upscale lower-resolution content to fit a 4K screen. On high-end TVs or signage screens, this process uses advanced algorithms to preserve detail and avoid blurring. On cheaper displays, upscaling can introduce artifacts or make the image look soft.

4. Brightness and contrast ratio 

Resolution does not impact how well a screen performs in bright environments. A high-resolution screen with low brightness or poor contrast might still look dull or unreadable outdoors or in brightly lit retail spaces. Especially in signage and DOOH applications, brightness levels (measured in nits or cd/m2) and contrast make as much difference as resolution.

Reflections can mask detail, making even a high-resolution screen look muddy. Matte finishes or anti-glare coatings help preserve sharpness by reducing visual distractions from surrounding light.

When Do You Need 4K?

Sometimes bigger is better - and sometimes the higher resolution is the obvious choice. But not every use case benefits from a 4K display. Whether you actually need 4k depends on three things: screen size, viewing distance, and content type.

Screen size and distance are the most critical. On smaller screens (under 40 inches), 4K offers limited visible benefit at normal viewing distances. But for large-format displays, interactive kiosks, or any scenario where viewers are close to the screen, 4K adds meaningful clarity.

Content type also matters. If your signage or media features detailed images, fine text, or intricate motion graphics, 4K ensures that detail is preserved. It's particularly valuable in:

  • Control rooms or command centers
  • Retail window displays
  • High-end showrooms or exhibitions
  • Medical and industrial imaging

However, if you're showing simple slideshows, ambient visuals, or streaming low-res video, Full HD may be sufficient.

Which is the Best Resolution for Digital Signage?

When it comes to digital signage, the use cases vary wildly. While digital signage displays need to balance clarity, performance, and cost, not every business needs the best screen possible. As an example, a menu board for a coffee shop or simple digital poster display could work just fine on an affordable HD screen. 

But a large screen in a shop window, or a data display in a warehouse will benefit from a bigger screen with a higher resolution.

In fact, while Full HD is still common in many deployments, 4K is quickly becoming the go-to resolution for new installations.

Full HD remains suitable when:

  • You're working with existing 1080p content
  • The screen size is under 50 inches
  • The display is viewed from a distance (e.g. hallway signage)
  • Budget or internet bandwidth is constrained

4K is preferred when:

  • The screen is large (55 inches or more)
  • The display is close to the viewer
  • You're running dynamic or interactive content (e.g. menus, dashboards, maps)
  • Your digital signage CMS supports native 4K playback

Which is the Best Resolution for DOOH Displays?

Digital-out-of-home (DOOH) advertising presents unique requirements. These displays are typically large, outdoors, and seen from various distances. While 4K (or higher) sounds desirable, the optimal resolution depends on pixel pitch, screen size, and viewer proximity.

In DOOH:

  • Pixel pitch (the distance between pixels) often matters more than resolution labels
  • 4K resolution is useful for large LED boards with high pixel density and close viewing
  • 1080p is still common, especially when viewed from a distance (e.g., roadside billboards)

The priority is ensuring legibility and clarity for fast-moving or glanceable content. Brightness, contrast, and weatherproofing often outweigh resolution in importance. How to Power HD and 4K Digital Signage

Yes screen resolution is important.  But you’ll also need the right infrastructure to support your display - or multiple displays if you’re powering a screen network. As well as screens, this also includes media players, content management systems, network bandwidth, and device storage.

For HD (1080p) digital signage:

  • Low-power media players (like Raspberry Pi, Google Chromecast and entry-level Android devices) can suffice
  • Most digital signage CMS platforms will support 1080p content
  • Local Wi-Fi or LAN is usually enough for content delivery

For 4K digital signage:
