Episode 4
Stress is often a taboo subject, and even more so for founders who are trying to project an image of confidence and control. But starting a business is stressful, especially in the early stages when you are trying to launch a product, raise investment, win customers and keep the lights on. It necessarily involves anxiety which can sometimes be a trigger for depression. In this episode we talk about the stresses, both good and bad, about starting a business. But Mark also reveals a time last year when he hit a difficult patch which he describes as a "mini breakdown".
We realised after we recorded the episode that we had strayed into the area of mental health, which, frankly, we're not qualified to talk about with any authority, beyond our own experiences. Mental health problems are more common than many of us realise and, according to the National Health Service in the UK, 1 in 4 adults will have a diagnosable mental health problem in any given year.
We hope that talking about this here might contribute to the movement towards being able to discuss mental health more openly.
