Tips and Tricks to Engage Your Warehouse Employees

With turnover rates as high as 500% in the deskless workforce, it should be a priority for HR and internal communications professionals to ensure their employee engagement strategies to target the ‘forgotten’ workforce in warehouses. Our blog explains how engagement is different among warehouse workers and guides you through opportunities to localize your engagement strategy to reach them.

Engaging your warehouse employees is an integral part of running a successful warehouse. By creating an engaging work environment, you can help ensure that your warehouse is efficient, productive, and safe. This post will provide a comprehensive overview of warehouse employee engagement.

What is Employee Engagement?

Employee engagement is the measurement of how invested your employees are in their work. It is notoriously difficult to keep employees engaged, so methods are always being innovated to improve employee engagement.

How Is Employee Engagement Different in Warehouses?

Engagement varies from workplace to workplace – engagement among office employees, collected behind their desks, will look different than engagement among remote employees.  However, engagement among employees with no desk at all seems to be neglected, as only a third of deskless workers see themselves staying in their current position for more than five years.

The difference between warehouse employees and office-based employees are as follows:

  • Physical challenges: Warehouse employees have to deal with more physical challenges, such as moving heavy objects, working in confined spaces, and operating machinery with less supervision.
  • Digital access: Warehouse employees are less likely to have access to digital devices to communicate, such as a phone to check their email.
  • Different shifts: Warehouse employees may have to work nights or weekends and therefore have a different amount of social interaction with their colleagues than those in other work environments.

Are you an HR or supervisor struggling to engage your warehouse employees? Look below for ideas.

Encourage Open Communication

Communication between you and your warehouse staff is essential for keeping them engaged. Encourage your employees to provide feedback and suggestions, hold regular meetings to discuss issues and ideas, and create an atmosphere of trust and respect.

Having clearly defined goals and expectations for your warehouse staff is essential for engaging them. Ensure your employees understand what is expected of them, the plans, and how they can reach those goals.

Open communication will also lead to collaboration, which is critical to positive warehouse engagement. Collaboration can help foster creative problem-solving and improved productivity by encouraging employees to work together and brainstorm solutions to problems or share ideas.

Make Safety a Priority

Your employees’ health and safety should always come first. To show that their safety is a priority, you should follow these steps for your safety messaging:

  • Develop a clear and consistent safety policy.
  • Train employees on proper safety procedures.
  •  Encourage employees to report any potential safety hazards.
  • Offer rewards or recognition for employees who demonstrate safe behavior.
  •  Invest in safety equipment such as protective gear and appropriate lighting.

Bolstering workplace safety boosts morale, as employees will feel more secure and confident when they know their safety is a priority.

Invest in Technology

Only 1% of company software funding went towards technology for deskless workers. This is alarming; over 4 out of 10 (44%) deskless employees argue their technology is slow and 70% report that technology would help them do their jobs better.

Consider investing in automated systems, such as robots, automated storage and retrieval systems, or software solutions that can help streamline processes, such as digital signage in warehouses.

Offer Flexibility

Warehouse employees often work in various conditions, including physically demanding labor and long hours. Offering flexible scheduling options can help make their workload more manageable, improving morale and engagement. This could include allowing employees to take breaks throughout their shifts or offering relaxed start and end times.

Holding Regular Warehouse Employee Engagement Activities

Activities such as regular group meetings to discuss work-related issues or team-building exercises can be an effective way to increase communication and collaboration among employees.

Foster a sense of camaraderie and engagement among employees with incentive programs. Incentive programs can effectively get your warehouse employees motivated and engaged. Offer rewards for good performance, such as gift cards or other prizes, and create a system of goals and objectives that employees can strive to achieve.

Provide Training and Development Opportunities

Adequate training and upskilling is one of the top five factors of frontline employee success and happiness; training and development opportunities are a great way to help employees stay engaged. This could include sending them to industry-specific conferences and workshops, or providing them opportunities to learn new skills. This will not only help to keep them engaged, but also help to ensure that they are up-to-date with the latest industry trends and techniques.

The Key Takeaway

The key to engaging warehouse employees is to focus on their needs and empower them to take ownership of their tasks. Through communication, recognition, and a supportive and transparent workplace, employers can create an environment that encourages employee engagement and motivation. With the right approach, warehouse employees can feel empowered and motivated to work hard to contribute to the business's success.
