Estate Coffee - Customer Story 

How Estate Coffee increased their business revenue using ScreenCloud's "one stop shop" digital signage solution. 

The very first Estate Coffee opened in Pacific Palisades in May 2018 as the in-house café of real estate franchise Keller Williams. It’s the brainchild of entrepreneur and real estate expert Rick Cunningham and chef Jacob Spooner, who wanted to create a meeting place for professionals and the general community. This is the first of many coffee shops that will become available inside real estate offices all over California. 

Estate Coffee needed a one-stop shop digital signage solution to advertise the services of the real estate agency as well as promote local events and the products of the coffee shop, like its local bakery.

Here, we speak to Jacob Spooner, Director of Cafés at Estate Coffee, about his experience using ScreenCloud digital signage.

We planned to use three screens in our the Estate Coffee café which were public facing, alongside agent-facing screens, which help to give the latest internal communications to our estate agents. We needed a digital signage solution which could let us manage both; advertising the products and services of the coffee shop and the real estate business to our visitors, and keeping our agents and employees informed with the latest real time information. 

We use ScreenCloud to advertise things like open houses, housing listings, mortgages, and insurance. Our content is created using a mixture of Photoshop and Canva, which lets our partners and agents develop content for their own playlists and screens. For the coffee shop, we promote upcoming events and show Instagram ads for our coffee and bakery vendors. We have a live feed of Yelp reviews and the weather, and in the future we want to add live cams of the nearby beaches for our visitors to get a real time view of what's happening near them.

We’re a meeting place where members of the local community come for both business and pleasure, and ScreenCloud allows us to communicate effectively with both those audiences. We get to promote the products in the coffee shop and the services of the real estate business. ScreenCloud's a one stop shop tool that’s generating additional business revenue for us. I’m already planning to set up four screens in the new coffee shop that's opening in the fall.

I came across ScreenCloud when I was opening the new Smoky Boys site and I wanted to look at digital signage. We knew we were opening in Boxpark Wembley, where there are 20 other units and we wanted to be a bit more eye-catching. We were also thinking about event days where we wanted to update the menus on the fly and do promos and use different imagery.

Other digital signage vendors were pushing bespoke hardware in the hundreds to the thousands of pounds, whereas with ScreenCloud all I needed was the software and an Amazon Fire TV Stick.

Mario’s Pizzeria is a household name pizza brand that has been serving gourmet pizza to the residents of New York since 1969. Throughout seven locations on Long Island, Mario’s pizzas are made from scratch and offered as full pies or “by the slice” to communities in store and online.

Here, we speak to Matthew Kalamidas of StoneHouse Creative, which manages creative and marketing for Mario's Pizzeria, on how they have implemented ScreenCloud. 

The old menu board system Mario’s Pizzeria was using was a built-in unit that was outdated and difficult to update. One of the owners reached out to me to see if I could assist them in sourcing digital displays and providing a solution that would solidify their branding and have the ability to highlight newer menu items.

I researched the various companies offering digital signage solutions and ended up settling on three options:

A company who had no monthly service fee but was very specific in the hardware needed which ended up being very costly.

A company who offered digital signage with moderate hardware costs but costly monthly fees.

ScreenCloud was chosen because of the reasonable cost, ease of use, assortment of features and apps and the ability for the end-user to select from a wide variety of hardware selections and price points.

We are running digital signage in three locations, each with five screens (15 screens total). 

Each location uses four screens as menu boards where we can list popular items and feature new or often-overlooked menu items and be nimble in swapping out items that are seasonally appropriate or are part of our marketing strategy. 

Each location then uses the fifth screen as a promotional/informational screen showing new items and offers as well as local information like the weather or our social media accounts.

We create our menu board content using the DSMenu app and our promotional content is partially generated from ScreenCloud apps like Weather app, the social media apps and Dropbox gallery.  We also create promotions as part of our overall marketing campaign in inDesign and upload them as a jpeg.

The immediate impact of having screens was that they are eye-catching. We utilize DSMenu to create two or three of the same menu board, then we only need to swap out the photos to replicate various versions. When played back as a series of images, the screens can show changing content, attracting the eye and helping us to feature more items. 

The customers are now engaged and we are seeing sales results in items which may have been overlooked in the previous menu board setup, as well as measurable sales in new initiatives.

As a branding and graphic design firm, I love the ScreenCloud solution and am already speaking to other clients on how their business can benefit from it. It’s a natural extension of my business in developing an identity and brand for my clients and taking their marketing beyond web and print solutions and providing them with another outlet to create cohesive messaging both outwardly in ads and promos, as well as now in-house on screens.

Mario’s Pizzeria is celebrating its 50th year this year. They’ve managed to exist for five decades because they have always thought about the quality of food and the customer experience. How a luxury residential development created a complete shift in the way this development interacts with residents.

Tree House is a multiple award-winning, luxury residential development located in Upper Bukit Timah, Singapore. In 2014, it set a new Guinness World Record for the world’s largest vertical garden. The building’s green wall measures 24,638.59 square feet and saves more than $500,000 in energy and water costs annually. The green wall also sustains its own living eco-system by supporting the growth of pollinators like bees and butterflies amidst this skyrise greenery. The rest of the building comprises a series of smart, connected systems such as heat-reducing windows and motion sensors that control lighting. Tree House has received a series of awards including the international Real Estate Federation, World Prix d'Excellence Award and is certified as a GreenMark Platinum development (equivalent to LEED Platinum). Tree House has recently been featured by Switzerland and Germany's national television stations in its work to build on the estate's unique green factor.

Here, we speak to Zacchaeus Lim, Secretary of the Management Council and one of the Directors of the Management Corporation at Tree House on his experience using ScreenCloud and digital signage.

In the past, we relied primarily on paper notices and noticeboards but we realised that engagement levels were limited and for a premium residential development that several thousand residents call home, we would have to explore new methods of interacting with our stakeholders. 

Digital signage was propounded as an option to support our organisation's core functions by:

(1) Providing greater informational flow to our residents.

(2) Enhancing our corporate branding by allowing us to display our bespoke corporate marketing content.

(3) Providing novel features like live traffic, news and weather tracking. 

I tried a number of digital signage solutions but many had dated interfaces which were not user friendly. In addition, some required specialised hardware to be deployed which was not possible since we needed to build on our existing infrastructure. Aesthetics is also a prime concern for us with the fit and finish of the software being paramount in a luxury estate. We wanted an easy to use but premium looking product and ScreenCloud delivered this. 

We use screens combined with Amazon Fire TV Sticks and graphic design created in house. We use several playlists with things like the news channel in Singapore which are all very dynamic and get pushed to screen.

This is in rotation with management information and partner advertising. 

The flexibility of use has been tremendous and we are very pleased with the software. 

As a premium residential development, the new digital signage additions to our feature-set present a paradigm change in the way our residents interact with us. 

A side benefit of this system is that we also opened up advertising channels for collaborations with 3rd party vendors. Today we work closely with premium international brands ranging from Bose, to Dean & Deluca and Crate & Barrel. 

In the future we intend to place more screens and offer targeted and differing content at each location. 

We are presently one of only 35 properties globally (including places like Trump International Tower in New York) and the only one within the entire Asia-Pacific to have a smart gym. What this means is that our residents are able to view live telemetric data from our gym sensors from their phones. 

For example, we are able to see if a treadmill or elliptical is available for use from the comfort of our phones anywhere in the world. This is also integrated into the Amazon Echo / Alexa eco-system such that we can ask Alexa at home, "Is the gym crowded?" or "Do I have a package at the Concierge?". 

In the near future,  I would like to have this sensor system integrated into ScreenCloud so that live sensor data from the gym will be visible on our screens across the estate.

How this venue implemented multiple different digital signage screens under one system using ScreenCloud.  

The Strand Ballroom & Theatre is Providence Rhode Island’s oldest theatre. Opening over 100 years ago on June 12, 1915, it has recently had a complete re-launch in order to bring the best national and international acts and tours of all genres back to Providence. As part of the renovation they wanted to use a series of digital screens to impress customers and display live information across the venue.

Within our new renovations we installed several TVs around the venue, all for different purposes and in different locations.

We looked at many screencasting solutions but we found ScreenCloud to be the easiest to use and the easiest to set up. We did not have to purchase any extra expensive equipment and the ScreenCloud solution had the most features available such as Live Page Scroll app and the ability to show pre-loaded content.

Within our new renovations we installed several TVs around the venue, all for different purposes. We purchased Vizio Televisions and they had VIZIOcast, which is essentially Chromecast, installed in all of them so we did not have to purchase any additional hardware. 

For content we used a combination of our own content such as flyers created in Photoshop and ScreenCloud’s apps for displaying content such as our website.

A TV behind each of our bars where we display flyers, drink specials, logos, and a goodnight screen for the end of the night, plus live stream videos from the stage. 

Two TVs on either side of the stage which we use to display our logo, band logos, etc.

Five TVs within our lobby (two hung vertically) for displaying our website using ScreenCloud’s ability to scroll, upcoming events, and safe driving logos for Uber and Lyft.

An expanding digital signage strategy to communicate better in the Hyatt Regency hotel.

The Hyatt Regency San Francisco is a top destination hotel in the Embarcadero district. With 804 rooms, a prime location opposite famous attractions such as Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf and the world’s largest hotel lobby, it is a key hub for business meetings, casual meets and special trips.

Here, we speak to Victor Povzner, IT Director at Hyatt Regency San Francisco on his experience using ScreenCloud and digital signage. 

We began by looking for a digital signage solution that would allow us to create three separate digital signs. One for the sales office reception, one for our Regency Club host stand and one for the employee cafeteria. These would all be using different types of screens and media players (that we already owned), but the same software system which was ScreenCloud.

We initially began with LG screens, in 40” and 50” sizes and different players including the Amazon Fire TV Stick and the Chromecast. We found that the Amazon Fire TV Stick best suited our application as it is able to automatically restart after the power or screen is rebooted without us needing to do anything. 

For our content we used in-house Powerpoint presentations and external web links. The ability for us to find a software solution that could utilize both Powerpoint and web links was a big plus.

We found ScreenCloud through Google recommending the app for its Chrome OS devices and players. The simplicity with which we are able to manage multiple screens is a huge advantage within our hotel. We are now looking to grow our digital signage strategy and will be using ScreenCloud to create rotating restaurant menus in key public areas.

How digital signage helped this deli to sell out of a previously "un-sellable" item.

Mitchell’s Delicatessen is a deli located in Nashville that specializes in fresh artisan sandwiches using high quality ingredients with a focus on supporting the local economy. Michael Britt, a photographer, was employed by Mitchell’s Delicatessen to initially shoot web content, before discovering business aims which led to the implementation of a full digital signage strategy.

For a freelance photographer to be able to easily manage and update content on a monthly basis from a desk at home.

I was hired to shoot a few sandwich photos and the building exterior for a website rebuild of my favorite local deli. I had the idea to do a time-lapse video of customers ordering and picking up their food and the web designer decided to use it full screen on the landing page.  

Because of the success with the video, the client asked me back to shoot some more footage for their social networks. I started paying attention to the client’s social media feeds to see how their social marketing people were using my video and stills and I was underwhelmed to say the least. Here we were with some great content and it was barely being used on Facebook and not at all on Instagram or Twitter.  The only place it shined was on the company website.

At a meeting with the deli owners, I asked why they wanted to be on social media and what was their immediate goal for the work we were doing together. Eventually it came out that business was strong and they had a great standing in the local community but they wanted to expand that sense of community with their customers who are actively engaged in social media. Increasing business was secondary to having strong connections to their customers. We talked about some of the restaurant’s pain points like long lines, not enough parking and a large menu with specialty items being overlooked.  

On an iPad, I showed them a couple of videos I created using Adobe Spark Video with underperforming menu items that I thought were being overlooked.

I also put together a slideshow video using customer Instagram posts that placed the comment over the image.

Customers had been posting glowing and eloquent praises about the deli for several years. I suggested we tap into that energy and instead of contests or other promotions, we give $10 gift cards out to repost customer generated content and use it in-store on a digital signage screen along with the content I was creating.

After factoring in that studies show a 35% decrease in perceived wait times while in line (another pain point for the business), setting up a digital signage screen was an easy sell.

I originally wanted a monitor with built-in capability to run the Android software and ScreenCloud but the owners delayed purchasing my initial recommendation. This was all new territory for them so I found a nice Sony TV that was half the price of my initial recommendation and they ordered it immediately.

I think it’s best not to get too hung up on hardware at the beginning of this process. I have Screencloud running on my personal Amazon Fire TV box which is being replaced now that Amazon is shipping the updated Fire Stick.

I used Adobe Spark to create video content that gets shown on my client’s digital screen using ScreenCloud. Short pieces are also used on their website and looping on social media.

Smoked Chicken and Potatoes

With Adobe Spark, I can easily combine stills, video, text and music using a cloud based app for quick client turn around. Last week, I shot a video at 3pm and had it in ScreenCloud playlist rotation on their in-store monitor by 5pm on the same day. 

As a creative, I’ve been watching the digital signage market for several years. I’ve even lead a roundtable discussion at the Digital Signage Expo about creating 4K digital signage content in my role as a Sony Artisan of Imagery. Going into this project, I was aware of several hardware and software options.

I liked that ScreenCloud let me try it out before I committed to any long term contracts or specialty hardware. It was really easy to get a demo running in my living room on a home theater flat screen with an Amazon Fire Box. At the time, I joked with my wife that it only took 15 minutes to set up plus the 4-5 years I’ve been researching this field.

So far the digital signage screen has been a big hit with the employees and the customers. I set the start and stop times for the ScreenCloud playlists to run and it just works. The screen has never been blank or off during business hours since this project began running live three weeks ago. 

By clarifying the client’s goals and finding multiple uses for the visuals, the client was able achieve a much better ROI, a stronger social presence and a direct communication tool with customers in the store through digital signage. Additionally, I now have a monthly contract to create and implement interesting content for this three-pronged approach. And I’m able to easily manage the client’s in-store digital screen from my desk at home using ScreenCloud and Adobe Spark web applications.

The only problematic feedback has been that customers think the video presentation is so good that it must be from a TV show or some other source. Content that is perceived as too good to have been generated by a small business is not a bad problem to have!

Just wanted to update you with some results from the in-store signage at the deli. You may remember that we originally created a smoked chicken video. This was because the deli was having trouble selling the chickens and wanted to pull them from the specials menu. Despite having been a regular customer for over a year I didn't know they offered chickens so I used this as a test metric. The deli usually has 12 smoked chicken meals on offer. Pre-signage the most they'd ever sold was 4 out of 12 of those chickens. 

Since the launch of the digital signage, they have been playing the smoked chicken video as part of their digital signage playlist. 

I went in last Friday to pick up a chicken for myself and they were sold out. This had never happened before. Now they are regularly selling out and have even had to make a "sold out" sign for the chicken hot case.

This increase in sales can be directly linked to promotion on the digital sign. I’m looking forward to being able to increase sales of other items using ScreenCloud digital signage and Adobe Spark Video.

Below we speak to Ian Coll, Founder and MD, on the digital signage strategy behind Mamuśka!. 

We were using a free, basic, yet tedious web based signage application in the restaurant originally. When the opportunity came along to trial a beta version of the ScreenCloud product we first did it because we thought “anything will be better than this” but we are still using ScreenCloud today and are looking at rolling in more screens, due to the ease at which non-techie staff can update and post content.

Mamuśka! uses ScreenCloud across its entire screen network, which includes digital menu boards in our sister deli across the road (Mój Sklep, or ‘My Shop’). Here, we are running ScreenCloud from Amazon Fire TV sticks connected to 40” and 50” screens. In the main Mamuśka! restaurant and bar location, we are using two Sony Smart Ultra-HD 49” screens and a 24” Display with an Amazon Fire TV stick. 

Most of our content creation was being done in-house with photos from our menus, beer advertisements from YouTube and other third party supplier content helping to power our screens. However, since we’ve expanded our social media marketing we have started to direct highlights from these social media and online review channels to help make better use of a number of the super ‘linking’ apps available in the ScreenCloud App Store.

ScreenCloud has allowed us to instantly display photos of our delicious food, post information on upcoming events, promote special products and even to help push short-dated unpasteurised beer, thereby bridging the gap between promotion, sales and operations, resulting in reduced losses.  All of this has been achieved with ease because our front of house staff can access and post themselves, without having to go through the IT Geeks! Using ScreenCloud we have saved time and money, have livened up the whole brand experience and are achieving very effective results all around.  We can’t wait for the next developments coming down the line with this fantastic product.
